Saviour Transfiguration Monastery in Yaroslavl

The oldest monastery in Yaroslavl stands where the Kotorosl flows into the Volga and long served the city as a fortress and a treasury. Its Transfiguration Cathedral of 1506 to 1516 is the oldest surviving building in the city. According to the widely held view, the copy of The Tale of Igor's Campaign discovered at the end of the eighteenth century came from the monastery collection. A museum reserve works within the walls today, and the stretches of the fortress wall are open for walking.
