Assumption Cathedral in Rostov Veliky

The Assumption Cathedral stands on Sobornaya Square in Rostov Veliky, right against the walls of the metropolitan's court. The present white-stone building is dated to the beginning of the sixteenth century, while a church on this spot has been known since the end of the tenth century and was rebuilt more than once after fires and collapses. Five dark heads are raised on broad drums, the walls are divided by pilaster strips and girded with an arcaded frieze in the Vladimir and Suzdal manner. Fragments of seventeenth-century wall painting and the tombs of the Rostov bishops survive inside. A belfry is set right against the cathedral, and its fifteen bells give the famous Rostov peals.
