Sipiso-piso Waterfall lies near Tongging in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, at the northern end of Lake Toba. The stream drops about 120 metres from the edge of the caldera into the valley, bringing together a sheer cliff, green slopes and a broad view of the lake. The name is often translated as knife-like waterfall, referring to the narrow ribbon of water cutting through the high escarpment. A road leads to an upper viewpoint, while a long stairway descends toward the foot of the falls. The climb back is steep and takes time, especially in hot weather. Sipiso-piso fits naturally into a trip around the Karo highlands and Lake Toba’s northern shore; Tongging and Merek are nearby, and the caldera is visible from the approach. During the rainy season the flow is stronger, but steps and paths can become slippery, so check conditions and allow time for the walk. It is one of the most striking natural viewpoints around Lake Toba and a memorable way to see the volcanic landscape of North Sumatra.
