Bromo Volcano

Mount Bromo is an active volcano in East Java, within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. It rises inside the vast Tengger Caldera, a volcanic basin of several cones and a broad sea of sand. Bromo is recognized by its smoking crater and steep slopes; nearby Mount Batok and the other peaks of the park complete the skyline. The summit reaches about 2,392 metres, yet the defining feature is the scale of the surrounding volcanic landscape rather than the height of one peak.

The route to the crater crosses the sandy plain at Bromo’s foot. Visitors travel across it on foot, by jeep or on horseback, then climb a staircase toward the crater rim. Viewpoints on the surrounding high ground look across the caldera, where smooth stretches of sand meet sharply cut volcanic ridges. This is not a landscaped urban park but an active volcanic area, so visitors should check national park rules and current access restrictions before setting out.

Bromo also holds cultural importance for the Tengger people, the Indigenous community of this region. Their annual Yadnya Kasada ceremony is connected with the volcano and takes place at the crater, where offerings are made as part of a living religious tradition. The national park therefore brings together natural heritage and local culture. A visit introduces the vast caldera, but it also offers context for how life beside an active volcano has shaped the beliefs and customs of the people who live here.
