Kuang Si Falls

Kuang Si Falls lies in a forested area about 29 kilometres south of Luang Prabang. Water descends through a series of limestone cascades and natural pools. In the dry season, minerals in the water give many of the pools a blue or turquoise appearance. After rain, the flow can grow stronger and the water may turn brown, creating a very different scene.

This photograph, taken on 7 August 2026, shows broad, forceful cascades surrounded by dense forest. It captures the falls during the rainy season, rather than the clear blue pools often seen in travel photographs. Several levels are visible, though the image does not represent the full walking route through the site.

Natural pools around the falls are used for swimming. Choose only areas marked for swimming and follow signs at the site. Rocks and paths can be slippery after rain, so keep to maintained routes and heed any temporary closures. The Free the Bears rescue centre is near the entrance, and can be visited as part of a walk through the forested grounds.

Allow time for the return journey from Luang Prabang as well as for walking around the cascades. Trail conditions, access to individual pools, opening times and admission arrangements can vary, so check current notices before setting out.
