The station building was put up in 1917 to the design of Arthur Benison Hubback, the architect of the station in Kuala Lumpur. Its white facade with domes, an arcade and Moorish motifs earned the building the nickname the Taj Mahal of Ipoh. The upper floors were taken up by a station hotel, and trains on the Kuala Lumpur to Penang line still stop here.
