Description

Sudak is a coastal town in the southeastern part of the Crimean Peninsula, set between mountains and a bay on the Black Sea. Its historic skyline is dominated by the Genoese fortress on Fortress Mountain, where walls and towers overlook the town and coast. The fortifications developed during the period of Genoese control in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The surviving complex includes defensive walls, towers, the Consular Castle and remains of buildings within the fortified enclosure. The museum reserve covers a large area on sloping ground, so visitors should allow time and wear comfortable shoes. Sudak is also associated with vineyards and wine-making in the surrounding countryside; walks along the waterfront and trips to nearby coves reveal the natural setting around the town. Set aside a separate part of the day for the fortress, then explore the historic centre and coast on foot. In summer, much of the fortress is exposed to the sun, so bring water and sun protection. Sudak can serve as a base for exploring the eastern coast of the peninsula, although distances to neighbouring settlements should be considered when planning local trips.
