The main covered market of the Iranian capital runs to more than ten kilometres of corridors, each with a trade of its own in carpets, copper, textiles, spices or jewellery. The present layout took shape in the nineteenth century under Naser al-Din Shah. Besides the shops the quarter holds working mosques, banks and inns, and the main entrance is on the side of Sabzeh Meydan square.
