The congregational mosque inside the Tehran bazaar was begun under Fath-Ali Shah Qajar at the start of the nineteenth century and took about eighteen years to build, and until the revolution of 1979 it was known as the Shah Mosque. The courtyard is turned towards the qibla and framed by four iwans, the richest of which opens into the main prayer hall under the dome. A passage leads from the courtyard straight into the trading rows of the bazaar.
