Kazan Cathedral in Yaroslavl

The Kazan Cathedral serves as the main church of the Kazan convent in Yaroslavl. The house was founded in 1610, after the siege of the city, and named for the Yaroslavl Kazan icon of the Mother of God, brought here from Romanov. The present building in the late classical style was put up between 1835 and 1845 on the site of the earlier church and finished with five gilded heads. Inside, the walls, piers and vaults are covered with painting throughout, and a tiered gilded chandelier hangs above the crossing. In the Soviet years the cathedral housed the regional archive; it was returned to the convent in the nineties, after which the painting was uncovered and renewed.
