The corner tower of the Saviour Transfiguration Monastery was laid in the first half of the seventeenth century, when the monastery was being fortified anew after the Time of Troubles. Through its gate people entered the community from Bogoyavlenskaya Square. Whitewashed walls and a wooden tented roof keep the look of a fortress, although streets with tram wires have long since been laid around it.
