Fyodor Volkov Theatre

The Yaroslavl drama theatre bears the name of Fyodor Volkov and is considered the first Russian professional theatre. Volkov, a merchant's son, gathered his company in Yaroslavl in 1750; at first they played in a tannery barn, and two years later the actors were summoned to the court in St Petersburg. The present building on Volkov Square was built in 1911 to a design by the Moscow architect Nikolai Spirin, who had won an open competition. The yellow facade with a colonnade is completed by a sculptural group of Apollo and the muses, with reliefs on theatrical subjects placed on either side of it. Every autumn the Volkov festival is held here, bringing productions from other cities.
