The Dali Museum occupies a mansion in the southern part of the old town, built on the model of the residence of Du Wenxiu, leader of the Muslim uprising of the middle of the nineteenth century. The collection tells the history of the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms through stone stelae, Buddhist sculpture, ceramics and the everyday objects of the Bai people. The display is laid out across several buildings around open courtyards planted with trees and flower beds. From the courtyards one sees tiled roofs and the wall of the Cangshan mountains beyond the grounds. Admission is free, and the layout itself gives a good idea of a traditional Bai mansion.
