Menara Maybank

Menara Maybank is a tower on a hill at the northern edge of the Chinese quarter, finished at the end of the eighties and for several years the tallest building in Malaysia. The architect Hijjas Kasturi took the silhouette of the hilt of a keris, the traditional Malay dagger, as his starting point, hence the obliquely cut top and the vertical ribs running the whole height. Because of the rise it stands on, the tower is visible from almost any street in the old centre, and together with the Menara Kuala Lumpur television tower it sets the recognisable skyline of the city. A small museum of numismatics with Malay coins and old currency substitutes works in the lobby. In the evening the facade is lit with a warm golden light.
