Kwai Chai Hong

Kwai Chai Hong is a short lane in the Chinese quarter of Kuala Lumpur, hidden behind the trading rows of Petaling Street. The name is translated roughly as the alley of little demons, because in the middle of the 20th century this corner of Chinatown had a bad reputation. In 2019 a row of prewar shophouses was restored and painted in ochre and terracotta, and the walls were covered with murals about life in the quarter in the sixties. Garlands of red lanterns are strung above the passage and are lit once it grows dark. Bars and coffee houses now work in the old shops, and the lane itself has become the most photographed spot in Chinatown.
