Tuanku Abdul Rahman street, which the city simply calls Jalan TAR, runs from Independence Square to the Chow Kit market and remains the main trading axis of old Kuala Lumpur. The prewar two-storey shops here have been restored and painted in red, blue and ochre, keeping their moulded cornices and wooden shutters. The ground floors are taken by shops selling fabrics, saris and ready-made clothing, kept by Indian and Malay families for more than one generation. On Saturdays part of the roadway is closed off and a night bazaar with food and small goods is spread out. The street is named after the first prime minister of the country, and before independence it bore the name of Batu Road.
