Irek Mosque stands in the lower part of the Kremlin hill, by Dvortsovaya Square, a few minutes' walk from the walls of the Kazan Kremlin. The building is laid in pale stone and finished with a turquoise dome bearing a crescent, while two slender minarets with matching turquoise finials rise on either side. The walls are covered with shallow carving in a floral pattern, and the entrance portal repeats the shape of a pointed arch. The mosque was built recently and serves a small congregation, so there is none of the crush usual in large mosques. Its name translates from Tatar as freedom.
