The main pedestrian street of Kazan runs from the kremlin walls to Tukay Square. Merchant houses of the nineteenth century line it along with the Epiphany bell tower and the Monastery of St John the Baptist, and fountains and bronze figures are set out between them. The street was given over to walkers at the turn of the 1990s and has remained the chief place for strolling in the centre ever since.
