Kluang is in central Johor and serves as an important administrative and transport centre for the state’s interior. Its growth accelerated in the early twentieth century: in 1915 the town became the administrative centre for central Johor, and the railway reached Kluang, connecting it with other towns on the peninsula. In the following decades, nearby rubber estates expanded and the town developed as a place for trade, work and travel across the region. The railway station and the surrounding commercial streets still reflect that role. Kluang Rail Coffee, a family business at the station, traces its beginnings to 1938. The town also has a wider coffee culture, including cafés and roasters associated with the Kluang Coffee brand. In the centre, the lanes of Laman Kreatif Kluang offer a different kind of local history: the municipal council improved the back lanes and turned their walls into an open-air gallery of murals about the town, its livelihoods and everyday life. Kluang makes a useful stop between Johor Bahru and the state’s inland districts. Markets, shops, cafés and parks are spread through the town, while Gunung Lambak offers a nearby hill walk. Longer nature trips, including Gunung Belumut, need separate planning. For a short stay, the railway station, a cup of local coffee and the mural lanes make a compact introduction to Kluang before continuing by train or bus.
