Description

Novosibirsk

The capital of Siberia on the Ob — Novosibirsk State University and the Akademgorodok science town, the opera house and a zoo with white tigers.

Wiki

Novosibirsk is not a tourist city in the usual sense but a living metropolis, the third largest in Russia, which grew in little more than a century from a railway settlement beside the bridge over the Ob. People usually come through in transit on the Trans-Siberian Railway, or for specific things: the university atmosphere of Akademgorodok, a strong opera house and one of the best zoos in the country. Two days are enough to understand the city without getting bored.

Why come, and what is genuinely worth seeing

  • The Opera and Ballet Theatre — the largest in Russia, a monumental building with an enormous dome on Lenin Square. Even if you are not going to a performance, the building and the square are the city's main visual landmark.
  • Novosibirsk Zoo — what many people come for. One of the largest in the country, known for breeding big cats, including white tigers and ligers. It is set in woodland parkland and takes several hours to walk round, so allow half a day.
  • Akademgorodok — a scientific suburb in a pine forest, with Novosibirsk State University, research institutes and an entirely different rhythm of life. It is worth going out there for the contrast: quiet streets among the trees, a student atmosphere, and nearby the "Ob Sea" (the reservoir) with beaches in summer.
  • Krasny Prospekt — the city's main axis, a long straight street with constructivist and Stalin-era buildings. Good for a walk from Lenin Square.
  • The Chapel of St Nicholas — the notional "centre of Russia", the symbolic midpoint of the country, standing on Krasny Prospekt.

Do not expect antiquity or postcard views — the city is young and functional. Its value lies in its scale, its science and its living Siberian everyday life.

Getting there and getting around

Tolmachevo Airport is a major hub, 16 km west of Novosibirsk by the town of Ob. City buses and shared minibuses run into the centre; taxis via apps are inexpensive compared with European Russia. Allow time for rush-hour traffic.

Novosibirsk is on the Trans-Siberian Railway, so the train is the logical option if you are travelling across Siberia. Novosibirsk-Glavny station is a sight in itself — an enormous green building.

Within the city:

  • The metro — small (two lines) but useful for the central axis and for crossing the Ob on the metro bridge. The fastest way between key points.
  • Buses and shared minibuses — they cover everything, including the trip out to Akademgorodok (which is a noticeable distance out of town, so the journey takes time).
  • The centre is compact, and the main things around Lenin Square and Krasny Prospekt can be walked.

Where to stay

Best is the centre, around Lenin Square and Krasny Prospekt: the metro, the theatre and cafés are close, and the railway station is within walking distance. It is convenient both for the airport and for trips out. For a budget, look at hostels and apartments slightly off the main square — accommodation prices in the city are moderate. It is only worth sleeping in Akademgorodok if you have come specifically for the science or the countryside, as it is a long way from the main sights.

A two-day plan

Day 1 — the city. Lenin Square and the opera house, a walk along Krasny Prospekt, the chapel, and the Ob embankment with its view of the bridges. In the evening, a performance at the opera or dinner in the centre.

Day 2 — the zoo and Akademgorodok. The zoo in the morning (half a day), then out to Akademgorodok: the university, the forest, and the Ob Sea if you wish. Bear in mind that the journeys eat into the time, so plan the route in advance.

Food and money

Novosibirsk feels cheaper than Moscow and St Petersburg. Eating out is well developed, from student canteens in Akademgorodok to modern cafés in the centre. Look for Siberian cooking — pelmeni, game, and fish (muksun, nelma, grayling, all river and northern species), and stroganina (shavings of frozen raw fish) in winter. Coffee shops and bars are concentrated around the centre. The easiest savings are eating in cheap canteens and using city transport instead of taxis.

When to go, and things to note

  • Summer (June–August) — the optimum: warm, the Ob Sea beaches open, Akademgorodok green. But it can be hot, with mosquitoes near the water.
  • Winter — harsh and long, with serious frosts. You can come, but only with warm gear; on the other hand winter opera and snow-covered forest are good.
  • The shoulder seasons are muddy and raw, and less interesting.

Practicalities: the city is as safe as any large metropolis — watch your belongings on transport and at the station, and the centre is calm in the evening. The main mistake visitors make is underestimating distances: Akademgorodok and the airport are genuinely far and the traffic is heavy, so do not schedule a flight and a distant destination tightly on the same day. And do not expect museum tourism from Novosibirsk — treat it as a convenient base and a cross-section of the real Siberia, rather than a postcard route.
