Sukhothai, Thailand: the historical park and ancient temples

The modern town and the ancient capital

Sukhothai is used for both the modern urban area and the historic centre of the former kingdom. They are separate places: the modern town lies east of the historical park, about 12 kilometres from the old city. Most of the best-known temples are within the archaeological zone, inside and beyond the former walls.

Temples in the historical park

The central zone includes Wat Mahathat, with rows of stupas and monastery remains, and Wat Si Sawai, known for its three prangs. Wat Si Chum is recognised for the monumental seated Buddha in its mondop; Wat Phra Phai Luang lies north of the old walls. These sights are spread across the archaeological site, so allow most of a day to visit several of them.

Planning your visit

A bicycle or local transport helps cover the distances between park zones. Arrange a separate ride between the modern town and Old Sukhothai, and check the departure point and schedule in advance. Start early, carry water and plan a break during the hottest part of the day.

One day works for the main temples inside the walls. A second day leaves time for the northern zone, the museum and less-visited ruins. Confirm opening hours, entry rules and access before travelling.
