The religious centre of Tashkent grew up around the grave of Abu Bakr Kaffal Shashi, a theologian of the tenth century. Facing the square are the sixteenth-century Barak Khan madrasa, the Muyi Muborak madrasa and the large congregational mosque of Hazrati Imam, built anew in 2007. The repository of the complex keeps the Quran of Uthman, one of the oldest manuscripts of the Quran.
