A memorial complex of the 14th–15th centuries in Shahrisabz. The main building is the Kok-Gumbaz mosque ("blue dome", 1435), built by Ulugbek in honour of his father Shahrukh: the inscription on the portal states plainly that the mosque was erected in his name. It is the largest Friday mosque in the city, and its dome is visible from far away. Beside it stand the Gumbazi-Seyidan mausoleum, to which Ulugbek moved the burials of the descendants of the Termez sayyids, and the mausoleum of Shamsiddin Kulal, spiritual mentor of the Timurids. Between the buildings lies an old cemetery with the gravestones of nobles of the Barlas clan, to which Timur himself belonged. The name means "house of contemplation of the Quran": the complex was conceived as a place where the holy book is read and interpreted, and not only as a burial ground. The mosque is still in use, and people still gather here for Friday prayer.
The Kok-Gumbaz mosque is still in use and people gather here for Friday prayer; visitors are let into the courtyard in modest clothing, and entry is usually free. The complex is in the historic centre, next to other Timurid monuments — everything is within walking distance.
