The brick fortress built between 1525 and 1531 under Vasili III on the site of a wooden one formed the southern line of Moscow's defences. Seven towers and several stretches of wall have come down to the present day, the rest having been taken apart for bricks by townspeople in the nineteenth century. The best known of them is the corner Kolomna Tower, called Marinkina after the legend that Marina Mniszech was imprisoned in it.
