Ramparts of Ancient Balkh

The slumped mud-brick ramparts on the edge of Balkh are what is left of the defences of the city the Greeks called Bactra. The surviving walls and the Bala Hisar citadel in their present form are dated to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. A path runs along the crest of the rampart, and houses and gardens press right up against it from below.
