A short canal, 228 m long, dug in 1718-1719 between the Neva and the Moika in the very centre of St Petersburg. It runs beneath Palace Embankment and Millionnaya Street, threading through the buildings of the Hermitage Theatre and the Small Hermitage. It is famous from Tchaikovsky's opera The Queen of Spades, in which Liza throws herself into the water here. One of the most photographed spots in the city.
