Was ein IDP ist und wann es dich rettet
Ein internationaler Führerschein ist kein eigener Führerschein, sondern die amtliche Übersetzung deines nationalen. Er gilt nur zusammen mit dem Original und wird an einem Tag ausgestellt.
Zwei Konventionen
Es gibt zwei IDP-Formate: die Wiener Konvention von 1968 und die Genfer von 1949. Welches ein Land anerkennt, entscheidet, ob dein Schein überhaupt gilt — Japan etwa akzeptiert nur das Genfer Format.
Klasse A entscheidet alles
Der Klassiker auf zwei Rädern: einen Roller mit Klasse B mieten. In Thailand, Indonesien und auf Bali ist das der häufigste Bußgeldgrund, und nach einem Unfall zahlt die Versicherung schlicht nicht — weder für dich noch für andere.
Bis 125 cm³ in Europa
In den meisten EU-Ländern darfst du einen 125-cm³-Roller mit Klasse B fahren, wenn du sie seit drei Jahren hast. Außerhalb Europas gibt es diese Erleichterung meist nicht: entweder Klasse A oder gar nichts.
Linksverkehr
Großbritannien, Irland, Zypern, Malta, Japan, Thailand, Indonesien, Indien, Südafrika, Australien und Neuseeland fahren links. Auf dem Motorrad ist das gefährlicher als im Auto: In Kurven und an Kreuzungen zieht der Körper von selbst in die gewohnte Spur.
Brauchst du im Ausland einen internationalen Führerschein
Das hängt vom Land ab und davon, wie dein Führerschein aussieht. Moderne Führerscheine mit lateinischer Umschrift werden in Georgien, der Türkei, den USA, Mexiko und in weiten Teilen Lateinamerikas akzeptiert. In Südostasien, den VAE und Südamerika ist fast überall ein IDP nötig — ohne ihn ist die Anmietung illegal.
Motorräder sind eine eigene Geschichte. Klasse B berechtigt außerhalb Europas mit seiner 125-cm³-Regel nirgends zum Fahren eines Motorrads. Verleiher in Thailand und auf Bali geben Roller an jeden heraus, doch das ist ihr Geschäftsmodell, keine rechtliche Ausnahme: Die Polizei bestraft den Fahrer und die Versicherung zahlt nicht.
Ein IDP wird auf Basis deines nationalen Führerscheins ausgestellt, gilt drei Jahre und kostet wenig. Ihn vor der Reise zu besorgen ist günstiger als ein einziges Bußgeld vor Ort.
