Description

Pai is a small town in a mountain valley in Mae Hong Son Province in northern Thailand. It lies on the winding route between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son, and most visitors arrive by road through forested ranges and rural districts. The centre is compact, with a market, cafés, guesthouses and an evening walking street; development soon gives way to rice fields and the hills around the valley. The area offers nature outings as well as cultural visits. Pai Canyon, with its narrow ridges and steep slopes, is about eight kilometres from the centre. Hot springs, waterfalls and viewpoints are scattered through the valley, and itineraries may also include hill-community villages and a bridge over the Pai River. Distances between sights are substantial, so visitors usually use a scooter, car or local transport. Riders should be comfortable with mountain roads: routes are winding, and surfaces can become slippery after rain. Pai is often used as a multi-day stop between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son. The journey from Chiang Mai takes about three hours by bus or minivan, depending on traffic and conditions over the mountain passes. November to February is cooler and popular for travel, so accommodation and transport are best arranged ahead. The rainy season brings greener scenery, while downpours can make trips to waterfalls and outlying villages harder. The town centre is easy to explore on foot; check road conditions and local transport schedules before heading into the surrounding valley.
