Description

Taiping grew around Perak’s tin-mining industry and became the state’s first administrative centre after 1874. It retains a historic street plan and late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century buildings. The town’s development is closely linked to some of Malaya’s earliest railway, museum and municipal projects. The city’s main green space is Taiping Lake Gardens, established in 1884 on former tin-mining land. Taiping Zoo and the Perak Museum are nearby, while Bukit Larut rises above the town. These sights pair naturally with a walk through Taiping’s older streets and civic centre.
