Bellapais Abbey is a Gothic monastic complex dating from the thirteenth century, in the village of Bellapais in the foothills above Kyrenia. Its history is linked to the Latin Church on Cyprus and the Augustinian order; the name is often rendered as “Abbey of Peace.” The arcades, courtyard, and refectory are among its most distinctive architectural features, with details of medieval stonework still visible. Set above the coast, the site also looks toward Kyrenia and the Mediterranean.

The abbey works well as a standalone historic visit or as part of a walk through Bellapais’s old lanes. Explore the courtyard and surviving monastic rooms, noting the difference between original fabric and later restoration. The village has cafés and small places to pause, but the abbey itself rewards an unhurried visit. Steps and stone floors are uneven, and interior spaces can feel cool compared with the open courtyard.

Bellapais is a few kilometres from Kyrenia; a car or taxi is often the practical option, with return transport worth arranging in advance. Opening hours, entrance rules, and access to individual rooms can change, so check them before setting out. Wear shoes with good grip and account for summer heat. If you plan photography or want to attend an event, confirm local restrictions, as the abbey also serves as a cultural venue.
