The Flying Horse monument stands on a roundabout in the centre of Jiayuguan and serves as the main landmark of the town. On top is fixed an enlarged copy of the bronze courser treading on a swallow, the original of which was found in 1969 in a Han burial at Wuwei, also in Gansu province. This figure long ago became the emblem of Chinese tourism, and copies like it are put up in towns awarded the title of model tourist centre. A plaque bearing that title in Chinese and in English is fixed to the pedestal. Around the monument lies a small garden of clipped shrubs, behind which rise the blocks of the new part of town.
