Heritage of Cebu Monument

The Heritage of Cebu Monument stands in the historic Parian district, among old streets and houses connected with the city’s early history. Filipino artist Eduardo Castrillo created the large sculptural tableau, bringing figures and architectural forms together in one scene that visitors can walk around and study from different sides. The composition recalls episodes and people important to Cebu, including the Battle of Mactan and the arrival of Christianity.

Unlike a single statue on a pedestal, the monument has several levels, reliefs and interwoven stories. Details can be easy to miss at first, so walk around the full perimeter and view the work both from a little distance and up close. The three selected angles show the entire tableau, emphasize its vertical figures and bring individual sculptural scenes into view.

The Philippines’ national tourism site includes the monument in its Parian heritage route; the Yap-San Diego Ancestral House is nearby. These stops work well together on a short walk through old Cebu. The space around the monument is part of the active city, so leave room for passers-by and treat the sculptures with care.
