Rurikovo Gorodishche

An archaeological site at the head of the Volkhov: the seat of the princes of Novgorod from the 9th to the 15th century and, by tradition, the place to which Rurik was invited in 862. The ruins of the 12th-century Annunciation Cathedral survive and excavations continue. The site looks across to the St George's Monastery.
