The most ambitious structure of the Timurid age: the "White Palace" (1380-1404), Tamerlane's summer residence. Of the colossal building only the two vast entrance pylons survive, 38 m high and faced with dazzling blue and gold tilework. The inscription read: "If you doubt our power, look at our buildings." Even now the scale of the ruins is staggering, and it is easy to sense how immense the palace once was.
