This is one of the canals of the Vyshny Volochyok water system, the first artificial waterway in Russia, which under Peter I joined the Volga to the Baltic. The banks are faced with stone and planted with trees, and the Vanchakova Line with its old merchant houses runs along the water. Because of its canals and bridges Vyshny Volochyok has long been called the Russian Venice.
