Yogyakarta Sultan Palace (Kraton)

The Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is the working royal palace and historic center of the Yogyakarta sultanate. It is commonly called the Kraton. Rather than a single freestanding pavilion, it is a large compound of courtyards, gateways and buildings where court traditions are still maintained and museum collections are displayed. Its architecture combines Javanese forms with elements shaped by later periods, while the palace plan is connected to the historic city axis leading toward the northern square and districts. The Kraton offers more than interiors and collections. Cultural performances take place in some of its pavilions: the palace tourism site describes a programme at Bangsal Srimanganti featuring classical gamelan, palace musicians and local arts groups. Schedules and access to different sections depend on the palace programme, ceremonies and current visitor rules, so check the official Kraton tourism site before setting out. Allow time to walk through the courtyards and exhibition rooms that are open to visitors; some areas may close during ceremonies. Follow posted directions and respect any restrictions on photography.
