Hongshan Hill

A rocky hill of red sandstone in the centre of Urumqi, with a city park laid out around it. On the summit stands a brick pagoda of the early 19th century, put up as a charm against floods of the Urumqi river. The terraces of the hill give the main view over the city, taking in the business district with its lit towers and the traffic ring at the foot.
