Gerbang Malam Night Market

Gerbang Malam is the evening bazaar in the old centre of Ipoh, which unfolds on Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar and the neighbouring square. By day this is an ordinary roadway with parking, but closer to evening the traffic is closed off and traders set out rows of clothing, bags, small goods for phones and street food. The chief landmark is a corner shophouse hung with hundreds of red lanterns, with a historic confectionery shop on the ground floor. Trading holds on almost until midnight and serves as the main evening occupation in a city that otherwise closes early. From the square begins a quarter of colonial shophouses and old coffee shops where Ipoh white coffee is served.
