Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis

A necropolis on the southern slope of the Afrasiab site, where some fifteen mausoleums, mostly of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, line a narrow street that climbs in steps. The core of the ensemble is the venerated grave of Kusam ibn Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, and around it the kin of Timur and the nobility of Samarkand were buried. The portals are faced with carved glazed ceramic, and on some of them the signatures of the craftsmen survive.
