The single-domed white-stone church of 1165 was raised by Andrei Bogolyubsky on an artificial mound where the Nerl flows into the Klyazma, at the point where boats came up to the princely residence. In spring the floodplain fills with water and the church is left on an island in the middle of it. It is regarded as the summit of Vladimir and Suzdal architecture and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
