The Šargan Eight is a heritage narrow-gauge railway in western Serbia, running through mountain terrain between Mokra Gora and Šargan-Vitasi station. Its name comes from track loops that resemble the number eight on a map; this route design helps the train gain elevation across difficult ground. The line passes through tunnels, over bridges, and by several stops, with views over valleys and forested slopes in the Zlatibor region. Mokra Gora is the main departure point and a practical base for exploring nearby attractions.

The railway is both a scenic ride and an open-air museum of engineering heritage. Different trains may operate depending on the date and season, and stops allow passengers to see stations and surrounding landscapes. Drvengrad, a nearby traditional-style village, is a separate attraction and requires separate planning. The train journey does not replace walks in Tara National Park or on local nature trails; allow another day for those.

Timetables, journey length, and ticket sales vary by season. Check the operator’s current schedule and book ahead when travelling on popular dates. Arrive at the station early and confirm the departure point for your specific train. Open platforms can feel cool even in summer, so bring a windproof or rain layer. If travelling with children or anyone with limited mobility, check boarding and carriage access in advance.
