Earth ramparts of the old fortress crown the high bank of the Volga, for the wooden kremlin burned during the Time of Troubles and was never rebuilt, leaving only slopes and ditches. The hillfort now carries the Cathedral of Saints Boris and Gleb of the 1820s and the Church of the Saviour, which doubles as a belfry. From the ramparts there is a view of the Volga, the arched bridge and the Dormition Monastery on the opposite bank.
