Qué es el PIC y cuándo te salva
El permiso internacional de conducción no es un permiso aparte, sino la traducción oficial del tuyo. Solo vale junto con el original y se tramita en un día.
Dos convenios
Hay dos formatos de PIC: el del Convenio de Viena de 1968 y el de Ginebra de 1949. El formato que reconoce cada país determina si tu permiso sirve: Japón, por ejemplo, solo acepta el de Ginebra.
La categoría A lo decide todo
El error clásico sobre dos ruedas: alquilar un scooter con el permiso B. En Tailandia, Indonesia y Bali es la causa más común de multa, y tras un accidente el seguro simplemente no paga, ni a ti ni a terceros.
Hasta 125 cc en Europa
En la mayoría de países de la UE puedes llevar un scooter de 125 cc con el permiso B tras tres años de antigüedad. Fuera de Europa esa concesión no suele existir: o categoría A o nada.
Circulación por la izquierda
Reino Unido, Irlanda, Chipre, Malta, Japón, Tailandia, Indonesia, India, Sudáfrica, Australia y Nueva Zelanda circulan por la izquierda. En moto es más peligroso que en coche: el cuerpo se va solo al carril de siempre en curvas y cruces.
¿Hace falta el permiso internacional en el extranjero?
Depende del país y del aspecto de tu permiso. Los permisos modernos con transliteración latina se aceptan en Georgia, Turquía, EE. UU., México y buena parte de Latinoamérica. En el Sudeste Asiático, los EAU y Sudamérica casi siempre se exige el PIC: sin él, alquilar es ilegal.
La moto es otra historia. La categoría B no habilita para conducir moto en ningún sitio salvo en Europa con su límite de 125 cc. Los alquileres en Tailandia y Bali entregan scooters a cualquiera, pero ese es su negocio, no una excepción legal: la policía multa al conductor y el seguro no paga.
El PIC se expide a partir de tu permiso nacional, vale tres años y cuesta poco. Sacarlo antes del viaje sale más barato que una sola multa allí.
