Qu’est-ce qu’un PCI et quand il vous sauve
Le permis de conduire international n’est pas un permis à part mais la traduction officielle du vôtre. Il n’est valable qu’avec l’original et s’obtient en une journée.
Deux conventions
Il existe deux formats de PCI : la convention de Vienne de 1968 et celle de Genève de 1949. Le format reconnu par le pays détermine si votre permis est valable — le Japon, par exemple, n’accepte que celui de Genève.
La catégorie A décide de tout
L’erreur classique à deux roues : louer un scooter avec un permis B. En Thaïlande, en Indonésie et à Bali, c’est la première cause d’amende, et après un accident l’assurance ne paie tout simplement pas — ni pour vous ni pour les tiers.
Jusqu’à 125 cm³ en Europe
Dans la plupart des pays de l’UE, un scooter de 125 cm³ est accessible avec un permis B après trois ans de conduite. Hors d’Europe, cette tolérance n’existe généralement pas : c’est catégorie A ou rien.
Conduite à gauche
Le Royaume-Uni, l’Irlande, Chypre, Malte, le Japon, la Thaïlande, l’Indonésie, l’Inde, l’Afrique du Sud, l’Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande roulent à gauche. À moto, c’est plus dangereux qu’en voiture : le corps repart tout seul dans la voie habituelle dans les virages et aux carrefours.
Faut-il un permis international à l’étranger
Cela dépend du pays et de l’aspect de votre permis. Les permis récents avec translittération latine sont acceptés en Géorgie, en Turquie, aux États-Unis, au Mexique et dans une grande partie de l’Amérique latine. En Asie du Sud-Est, aux Émirats et en Amérique du Sud, un PCI est presque toujours exigé — sans lui, la location est illégale.
La moto, c’est une autre histoire. La catégorie B ne donne le droit de conduire un deux-roues nulle part, sauf en Europe avec sa limite de 125 cm³. Les loueurs en Thaïlande et à Bali confient des scooters à tout le monde, mais c’est leur modèle économique, pas une dispense : la police verbalise le conducteur et l’assurance refuse de payer.
Le PCI est délivré sur la base de votre permis national, vaut trois ans et coûte peu. L’obtenir avant le départ revient moins cher qu’une seule amende sur place.
